biotherapy with leeches and maggots
Treatment usually takes one to three weeks and ends when the wound is found
to be clean and free of all signs of inflammation. At this stage, maggots
often die automatically due to the deficient supply of nutrients.
How high the cost is for maggot therapy depends partially on the size of
the wound and how many applications are needed. It is also more expensive
to treat a patient in the hospital as it is on an out-patient basis.
Most health insurance providers and national health plans in Europe reimburse the costs of maggot therapy because it is an effective, low-cost treatment option. In the United States, many but not all insurance plans cover the cost of maggots and maggot therapy. Nevertheless, the patient should check with his or her insurance company.
